‎@Vish: what’s bullshit? that americans have in general restrained their consumption? i didn’t invent the graph, i just pulled it out of The Economist. Totally agree that governments must be proactive and anticipate. But as Arshaad pointed out, the graph was posted in relation to the previous post where some people were behaving as if they didn’t know what’s happening these days. And as far as being proactive and anticipating, the fact still remains (ant that was the main point) that Mauritius being such a small open economy, we inevitably are and will be affected by what happens elsewhere and specially in EU (our main export market). Nothing surprising or rocket science really, just stating the obvious. ie what heppens elswhere affects our revenues and expenditure….

Yes, indeed interesting the facts that some products that are meant to be inelastic are actually quite elastic when analysed closer. Also true that there will be a ripple effect of what is happening in Europe and elsewhere on the Mauritian economy – we should not forget the tourism industry – even though we are a niche market, people are tightening their belts and this may impact on our economy – would be interesting to know the statistics on our income via that particular industry – I think XLD must have faced a tough job while coming up with this budget, albeit his advisors must have done the lion’s share of the job! I would say that his budget must be a cost minimisation strategy, whilst increasing spending power of customer via a review of VAT and encourage SMEs to invest, which would boots the local economy..too much asking?
